Arbutus unedo

The photo is of the Arbutus unedo (commonly known as the strawberry tree). It shows a close-up of a plant with glossy, elongated green leaves and clusters of small, bell-shaped, cream-colored flowers. Some of the flowers have brownish spots or appear slightly withered. The plant is set against a background of other greenery and branches.

Arbutus unedo (Strawberry Tree), is a broadleaf, evergreen shrub in the Ericacea family, the same family as Heathers and Rhododendrons. It is native to the Mediterranean region and western Europe. It can also be grown as a small tree, usually to a height of 15’.  The red fruit matures in autumn and while edible are rather bland tasting. It has a very long flowering season, and often displays both fruit and flowers concurrently.  The bell-shaped flowers provide a welcome food source for hummingbirds, especially when other blooming plants are scarce.

The plants like well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.  They are quite salt tolerant and once established will tolerate periods of drought. The glossy, evergreen foliage, long-lasting flowers, and red fruits provide four seasons of interest for your landscape. We have several of the Arbutus unedo located in the front Pavilion terrace garden.
