The Joy (and aroma) of Harvesting Garlic

After the hot week we had, it’s time to harvest garlic!
Our Veggie Garden volunteers harvested several kinds of garlic last Thursday and the bulbs will be cured for a few weeks before being cleaned and bagged; look for them for sale during Harvest Festival on September 1st, Labour Day weekend (TIP: get here early – they usually sell out within the first hour!)
When the garlic was planted last October, the team experimented with two different kinds of fertilizer. They will be reviewing the results and publishing their findings in the next issue of our member newsletter, Salal.

We asked Vanessa Choo, Veggie Garden Coordinator, how to know when it is time to harvest garlic. “First, watch out for garlic scapes,” Choo says,  “they will appear around mid-June, with variation for micro-climates.”

“When the scapes have curled, that’s the time to cut them off and stop watering. And, after 3-4 weeks, when half the leaves are brown, it’s time to harvest.”
